A total of 257,700 unemployed jobseekers were registered at the Employment and Economic Development Offices at the end of December. This is 1,200 more than a year earlier. The number of unemployed jobseekers increased by 29,100 from the previous month. The increase in unemployment in December is a phenomenon occurring each year due to graduations from certain vocational education institutions, increases in lay-offs and a higher than normal number of fixed-term employment contracts ending during December. Unemployed jobseekers accounted for 9.8% of the labour force which is 0.1 percentage points more than a year ago. In 2019, the average number of unemployed jobseekers was 240,400, or 15,500 less than the year before. Unemployed jobseekers accounted on average for 9.2% of the labour force in 2019, which is 0.5 percentage points less than a year ago.
