Unemployed jobseekers by gender and age-group
Of the unemployed jobseekers, 178,400 (56%) were men and 137,400 (44%) were women, indicating a decrease of 4,600 for men and 9,400 for women from the figures for August. Compared with September a year ago, unemployment increased by 52,000 (41%) among men and by 37,800 (38%) among women.
At the end of September, unemployed jobseekers under 25 years of age numbered 38,100, representing an increase of 10,200 from September a year ago. Youth unemployment decreased from August by 3,900. For those under 20, the number of unemployed was 8,400. Among those over 50, the number of unemployed was 113,500, representing an increase of 27,300 on the year before. Among those over 55, the number of unemployed was 79,000, representing an increase of 18,000 on the year before. Proportionally, unemployment increased most in the age group 25–44 (on average 47%) and those over 64 (78%). Compared to August, unemployment decreased in all age groups with the exception of those over 60, the most in those aged under 20 (-12%) and those aged 20–24 (-8%).
