Unemployment increased more among men than women

Of the unemployed jobseekers, 178,100 (57%) were men and 134,600 (43%) were women, indicating a decrease of 300 for men and 2,700 for women from the figures for September. Compared with October a year ago, unemployment increased by 50,500 (40%) among men and by 37,500 (39%) among women.

Unemployment increased in all age groups

At the end of October, unemployed jobseekers aged under 25 numbered 36,300, representing an increase of 9,600 from October a year ago. Youth unemployment decreased from September by 1,800. For those under 20, the number of unemployed was 7,700. Among those over 50, the number of unemployed was 114,400, representing an increase of 28,200 on the year before. Among those over 55, the number of unemployed was 79,900, representing an increase of 19,200 on the year before. Proportionally, unemployment increased most in the age group 25–44 (on average 45%) and those over 64 (92%). Compared with September, unemployment decreased in all age groups with the exception of those aged 55–64, the most among those aged under 20 (-9%), those aged over 64 (-6%) and those aged 20–24 (-4%).
