Unemployment increased more among men than women

Of the unemployed jobseekers, 207,600 (58%) were men and 149,800 (42%) were women, indicating an increase of 26,300 for men and an increase of 16,600 for women from the figures for November. Compared with December a year ago, unemployment increased by 57,300 (38%) among men and by 42,400 (39%) among women.

Unemployment increased in all age groups

At the end of December, unemployed jobseekers under 25 years of age numbered 43,700, representing an increase of 10,900 from December a year ago. Youth unemployment increased from November by 7,700. For those under 20, the number of unemployed was 9,500. Among those over 50, the number of unemployed was 127,200, representing an increase of 32,100 on the year before. Among those over 55, the number of unemployed was 88,300, representing an increase of 22,200 on the year before. Proportionally, unemployment increased the most in the age group 25–49 (on average 44%) and those over 64 (92%). Compared with November, unemployment increased in all age groups, the most among those aged under 20 (24%) and those aged 20–24 (21%).
