Increase in unemployment higher among women than men

Of the unemployed jobseekers, 190,600 (58 %) were men and 136,600 (42 %) were women, indicating a decrease of 2,500 for men and 3,200 for women from the figures for January. Compared with February a year ago, unemployment increased by 44,000 (30 %) among men and by 35,000 (34 %) among women.

Unemployment increased in all age groups

At the end of February, unemployed jobseekers under 25 years of age numbered 38,800, representing an increase of 9,100 from February a year ago. Youth unemployment fell by 1,400 from January. For those under 20, the number of unemployed was 7,100. Among those over 50, the number of unemployed was 120,000, representing an increase of 26,500 on the year before. Among those over 55, the number of unemployed was 84,500, representing an increase of 19,100 on the year before. Proportionally, unemployment increased the most in the age group 25–44 (on average 35 %) and those over 64 (109 %). With the exception of those over 64, unemployment decreased in all age groups compared with January, the most among those aged under 20 (-5 %) and those aged 20–29 (-3 %).
