Unemployed jobseekers by gender and age-group
Of the unemployed jobseekers, 170,400 (57 %) were men and 130,700 (43 %) were women, indicating a decrease of 11,900 for men and a decrease of 5,300 for women from the figures for April. Compared with May a year ago, unemployment decreased by 58,300 (-25 %) among men and by 73,200 (-36 %) among women.
At the end of May, unemployed jobseekers under 25 years of age numbered 36,100, representing a decrease of 20,200 from May a year ago. Youth unemployment decreased from April by 2,500. For those under 20, the number of unemployed was 6,900. Among those over 50, the number of unemployed was 110,500, representing a decrease of 31,200 on the year before. Among those over 55, the number of unemployed was 79,000, representing a decrease of 15,100 on the year before. Unemployment decreased the most among those between 20 and 29 (-36 %) and those between 40 and 44 (-35 %). Among those over 64, unemployment increased by 2 % from the previous year. Compared with April, unemployment decreased in all age groups; the most among those between 20 and 24 (-7%) and those between 50 and 54 and those between 25 and 29 (-6%).
