Unemployed jobseekers by gender and age-group
Of the unemployed jobseekers, 133,400 (56%) were men and 105,700 (44%) were women, indicating a decrease of 10,000 for men and 23,100 for women from the figures for July. Compared with August a year ago, unemployment decreased by 24,300 (-15%) among men and by 17,600 (-14%) among women.
At the end of August, unemployed jobseekers under 25 years of age numbered 25,500, representing a decrease of 7,300 from August a year ago. Youth unemployment decreased from July by 4,900. There were 5,300 unemployed persons under 20. Among those over 50, the number of unemployed was 90,300, representing a decrease of 14,900 on the year before. Among those over 55, the number of unemployed was 67,000, representing a decrease of 9,100 on the year before. Unemployment decreased the most among those under 25 (-22%) and the least among those between 60 and 64 years of age (-8%). Unemployment remained unchanged for those over 64. Compared with July, unemployment decreased in all age groups; the most among those under 30 (-16%).
