Unemployed jobseekers by gender and age-group
Of the unemployed jobseekers, 133,000 (57%) were men and 99,400 (43%) were women, indicating an increase of 1,100 for men and a decrease of 1,600 for women from the figures for September. Compared with October a year ago, unemployment decreased by 15,400 (-10%) among men and by 11,300 (-10%) among women.
At the end of October, unemployed jobseekers under 25 years of age numbered 23,600, representing a decrease of 4,300 from October a year ago. Youth unemployment decreased from September by 500. There were 4,600 unemployed persons under 20. Among those over 50, the number of unemployed was 89,300, representing a decrease of 11,400 on the year before. Among those over 55, the number of unemployed was 66,300, representing a decrease of 7,300 on the year before. Unemployment decreased the most among those under 25 (-15%) and among those between 50 and 59 years of age (-14%). Unemployment decreased the least among 30 to 34-year-olds (-5%). Among those over 64, unemployment increased by 9%. Compared with September, unemployment increased only among those between 40 and 59 years of age (1%).
