Unemployed jobseekers by gender and age-group
Of the unemployed jobseekers, 151,300 (58%) were men and 109,100 (42%) were women, indicating an increase of 15,000 for men and 10,600 for women from the figures for November. Compared with December a year ago, unemployment decreased by 8,300 (-5%) among men and by 6,600 (-6%) among women.
At the end of December, unemployed jobseekers under 25 years of age numbered 28,100, representing a decrease of 3,000 from December a year ago. Youth unemployment increased from November by 4,900. There were 5,700 unemployed persons under the age of 20. Among those over 50, the number of unemployed was 96,000, representing a decrease of 9,400 on the year before. Among those over 55, the number of unemployed was 70,200, representing a decrease of 6,900 on the year before. Unemployment decreased the most among those under 25 (-10%), those between 60 and 64 (-10%) and those between 50 and 54 (-9%). Among those between 30 and 34, unemployment increased by 1% and among those aged 40-44 it remained unchanged. Compared with November, unemployment increased in all age groups, with the exception of those over 64 years (-7%). Unemployment increased from November the most among those under 25 (21%).
