Unemployed jobseekers by gender and age-group
Of the unemployed jobseekers, 152,100 (59%) were men and 105,900 (41%) were women, indicating an increase of 800 for men and a decrease of 3,200 for women from the figures for December. Compared with January a year ago, unemployment decreased by 7,100 (-4%) among men and by 8,600 (-7%) among women.
At the end of January, unemployed jobseekers under 25 years of age numbered 27,400, representing a decrease of 2,600 from January a year ago. Youth unemployment decreased from December by 700. For those under 20, the number of unemployed was 5,100. Among those over 50, the number of unemployed was 95,500, representing a decrease of 9,600 on the year before. Among those over 55, the number of unemployed was 70,100, representing a decrease of 7,100 on the year before. Unemployment decreased the most among those over 60 (-11%), those between 50 and 54 (-9%) and those under 25 (-9%). Among those between 30 and 34, unemployment increased by 1%. Compared with December, unemployment decreased in all age groups, with the exception of those between 55 and 59 years (1%). Unemployment fell the most from December among those under 20 (-11%).
